Because of the pandemic, the plans for science events had to be changed from the usual face-to-face format to a virtual format in record time. Today we talk about the challenges that these events posed for their organizers at a global level.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused one of the biggest disruptions in the way academic events are carried out in scientific associations, although virtuality has allowed the continuity of this type of events and some restrictions such as transportation and some associated costs have disappeared, other aspects such as multitasking, daily responsibilities at home and protected time for their attendance have taken a lot of strength, thus becoming a challenge for their organizers and for their participants.

In 2020 we were able to demonstrate how the main events organized by the major scientific organizations in our area were successfully carried out, managing to engage their participants and to a large extent fulfilling their role of educating and communicating about science.

Today in a Coffee for Rheumatology, Diego Jaimes, Carlo Vinicio Caballero, Editor in Chief of Global Rheumatology, Guillermo Quiceno, rheumatologist, director of the Rheumatology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Licia Mota, rheumatologist, D. in medical sciences from the University of Brasilia School of Medicine, and Loreto Carmona, research rheumatologist and scientific director of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health, discuss the main achievements at each of the three major academic events in rheumatology.
